Hiawassee Inn

Day: 7 (April 1)
Starting location: Deep Gap Shelter
Ending location: Hiawassee, GA
Miles today: 3.5
Miles total: 67.5

This morning we hiked the 3.5 miles down to US 76. We coordinated with the Hiawassee Inn to pick us up at the trail at 11am. Day Tripper also tried to coordinate a ride from June who's number was provided in the trail journal at Deep Gap Shelter. June said that he would be happy to pick us up but won't be able to this particular day because he had to get his drivers license at the DMV. Who would have thought!!!

Now about the 5 star Hiawassee Inn Resort & Spa. Ok, maybe I am being a bit untrue. It is pretty basic to say the least. We felt somewhat obligated to stay there since we received the free shuttle from the trail, which is about 9 miles and will also receive a shuttle back to the trail head on Saturday. I told Kristen that staying in the Inn creates character. Kristen wasn't so certain and she proceeded to wear her crocs in the shower.

For most of the afternoon, Kristen and I did our chores which included getting our 5 day resupply at the local Ingles and doing laundry at the nearby laundry mat. After chores, we hung out with the 12 or so other thru hikers that were also staying at the Hiawassee Inn. There was a gas station in front of the Inn so Kristen and I got a 40oz Bud Lite and a 6 pack of PBR (nothing but the best on the trail). Why a 40oz? Well 40oz bottles are illegal in the state of Florida, so it just seemed right to pick one up.

The day ended with the group ordering 7 pizzas. Kristen and I ordered a large, which we finished in about 5 minutes. We were both really tired and headed off to bed at 9:30. Tomorrow we will be taking a zero day and going to the April Fools Hiker Party in Franklin, NC.

My grandma and grandpa used to have a house in Hiawassee, GA, so I have alot of neat childhood memories visiting them.
